What is basmati rice?

Basmati is a long-grain aromatic variety of rice grown in India. It has a naturally occurring aroma similar to popcorn and a nutty flavor. When cooked, the grains are fluffy and separate. RiceSelect’s Texmati® is an American-grown basmati.

Is the serving size, 1/4 cup (45g), cooked or dry?

The serving size refers to 1/4 dry (uncooked) product; this is the equivalent to 3/4 cup of cooked rice.

Do I have to wash or rinse the rice before I cook it?

No, it is not necessary to rinse any U.S.-grown rice.

Is Texmati® all natural?

Yes. Our RiceSelect® products do not contain additives. The flavor and aroma of Texmati® is inherent to this particular variety of rice; there is nothing added to and/or sprayed on the grains.

How much cooked rice does 1 cup of raw rice yield?

Generally, most rice will triple when cooked, so 1 cup of raw rice will yield 3 cups cooked.

Can I cook rice in the oven?

Yes. The liquid must be boiling when added to the rice (and the optional salt and butter) in a shallow baking dish or pan; stir. Cover tightly and bake in preheated 350-degree F oven for about 25 minutes for white rice, 50-60 minutes for brown rice.

What is Jasmati® rice?

Jasmati® is a jasmine style of rice. Jasmine is a long-grain aromatic variety of rice that has a naturally occurring aroma and flavor. When cooked, the snowy-white grains are soft and moist and cling together.

When I cooked my rice, it turned out too hard, too soft, mushy or gummy. Why?

Do not disturb the rice during cooking by stirring (stirring releases the starches into the water). Some other reasons could be incorrect measurement of rice and/or water, inadequate simmer (too high or too low of a temperature), incorrect saucepan size, or inappropriate burner size.

What type of rice should I use for making rice pudding?

Our Jasmati® rice makes a great rice pudding. Short and medium grains such as RiceSelect® Sushi and Arborio rice also work well in rice pudding recipes.

Can I cook rice in a Crock-Pot?

No, this is not a recommended method for rice preparation.

Can I cook rice in any liquid other than water?

Yes, but if you choose to use fruit juice or any other acidic liquid, use half water, half juice. Any meat or vegetable stock can be used in place of water.

Can I use rice in a meatloaf, meatballs, stuffed bell peppers, stuffed cabbage rolls, etc.?

Yes, but make sure there is enough liquid in the recipe to hydrate the rice. We recommend using cooked or partially cooked rice for these types of recipes.

Is there a best-used-by date on your products?

Yes, there is. It is on the back side, between the cap and the label, and is printed directly on the jar.

Are RiceSelect® products certified kosher?

Yes, our RiceSelect® products are certified kosher by Star K.

Are any RiceSelect® products made with GMO ingredients?

All RiceSelect® products have been non-GMO Project Verified. 

Do RiceSelect's jars contain BPA?

No, they do not. The organic compound BPA (Bisphenol A), in the news frequently as of late, is used in the manufacture of many consumer products, as a component in some plastics and in the lining of cans used for foodstuffs. Studies have indicated that the compound is being ingested and could be harmful to human health as well as the environment. The FDA is pursuing additional studies to address what they see as uncertainties in the findings, as well as shifting to more robust regulations on BPA. Product safety is our number one priority. That is why we have chosen to make sure all of our PET (polyethylene terephthalate) jars are free of BPA. When it comes to our consumer’s health and well-being, we will not take any chances. We are committed to providing our consumers clear jars that are safe, innovative and protective of our products. 

What is the shelf life of rice?

White rice will keep almost indefinitely on the pantry shelf. Once opened, though, it should be kept in a tightly closed container to keep out dust and moisture and to prevent infestation by grain weevils. Brown rice, because of the oil bran layers, has a shelf life of about 18 months (less if subjected to temperatures higher than room temp.) To extend the shelf life, store in your refrigerator or freezer.
